How To Train Your Dragon
I’ll admit it right away: I was highly sceptical about what Dreamworks SKG (the animation branch of the mega film company) were going to bring to the table with this one. On the surface, the film sounds like everything a really good Pixar film usually is: fun, interesting, and full of inspired ideas that are usually…well, very Pixar and not so much anyone else.
Sitting down to watch this on my laptop, having just seen a particularly intriguing Fosters Beer Advert , I was fairly sure that I was not about to waste two hours of my life exactly, but that I’d at least feel a bit resentful. After all, when it comes to animation and films, we’ve seen a lot of good idea already. If you’re like me and you prefer films with real people – irrelevant of whether they are for children or adults – you can’t help but wonder how much more there is left to do in an industry that seems obsessed with cutesy images of toys, monsters and the like.
I was wrong. In fact, what How To Train Your Dragon is is anything but dull or similar to that which has come before. It is, quite simply, a gloriously well-told story that has been considered and virtually perfected on many levels. This, in my book at least, elevates Dreamworks to an admirable position. It would seem that they are finally creating story’s and images that can compete right alongside Pixar.
If you don’t know the story, well, it’s simple: in a mythical island somewhere – a place where Vikings fight a daily war against dragons hell-bent on destroying their home – a small very un-viking-like boy battles to prove himself, doing so by taming a fierce dragon and becoming the hero. There’s much more to it, though, so don’t take my word for it. No matter what age, this film has something for everyone, and is captivating enough to impress the most film-savvy audiences around.
